Future Faculty Grants (FFG) Program

Previous Grant Recipients

This page features brief descriptions of some of our previous Future Faculty Grant recipients' present academic activities, and how they used the grant to support their pursuit of careers in higher education.

Dr. Daniel Boutin
January 2006

Dr. Daniel Boutin

Dr. Daniel Boutin received his Ph.D. in Counselor Education with a minor in Higher Education at The Pennsylvania State University. He is now an Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at The University of Alabama. Specifically, Dr. Boutin conducts research, instructs graduate students, and serves stakeholders in the discipline of rehabilitation counseling.

The Future Faculty Grant, awarded to him in January of 2006, enabled Dr. Boutin to research the effectiveness of vocational rehabilitation for people with hearing impairments. The results of the research can be shared with researchers, students, and consumer groups who have an interest in people with disabilities joining the workforce. Dr. Boutin recently presented the results of his research at the annual conference of the National Rehabilitation Association.

Dr. Jennie Leach
January 2005

Dr. Jennie Leach

Dr. Jennie Leach is currently a Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her research is in the area of biomaterials and tissue engineering for soft tissue applications such as nerve repair and breast cancer.

The Future Faculty Grant, awarded to her in January 2005, helped her to attend a major cross-disciplinary symposium related to her research area. At the symposium she gained up-to-date knowledge about exciting new research advancements. Since then, she has had several opportunities to apply this knowledge in the classroom as well as in the laboratory. The symposium also provided her the opportunity to network with established investigators, who have since proven to be valuable connections for mentoring, potential research collaborations, and employment contacts for her students.

Dr. Soo Ah Kwon
July 2004

Dr. Soo Ah Kwon

Dr. Soo Ah Kwon received her doctorate from the Social and Cultural Studies Program at the University of California, Berkley's Graduate School of Education in 2005. She is currently spending a year as a post-doctoral fellow at the Teacher's College of Columbia University. In the fall of 2006, she will join the faculty at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as an Assistant Professor of Asian American Studies and Human and Community Development.

The Future Faculty Grant, awarded to her in July 2004, was instrumental in helping Dr. Kwon attend key academic conferences in her last year of graduate school. At these conferences she was able to present her work and network with other scholars in her field.

Karolyn Snarr
January 2004

Karolyn Snarr

Karolyn Snarr currently resides in Mesa, Arizona. She is an adjunct professor for two local community colleges and a local art center, where she teaches Ceramics (beginning through advanced), and Three-Dimensional Design. She is a member of Eye Lounge Gallery, located in Phoenix, Arizona, where she exhibits her work with other local artists. She enters as many shows as possible, both nationally and locally, in order to gain exposure. She recently won the Best in Show Award at the St. George Art Museum's Regional Exhibit in St. George, Utah.

The Future Faculty Grant, awarded to her in January 2004, provided her with necessary funds, as well as a confidence boost. She finds Academic Keys to be a great resource for keeping up-to-date on job postings, and browsing the professional resource listings.

She is pictured above doing a demonstration for her ceramics class.
